Meine Mutter klag ich an, Sie hat nicht wohlgetan; Was sonst in Ehren stünde, Nun [ist es worden]1 Sünde. Was fang ich an? Für all mein' Stolz und Freud Gewonnen hab ich Leid. Ach, wär das nicht [geschehen]2, Ach, könnt ich betteln [gehen]3 Über die braune Heid!

Ich habe die Welt vergessen, Seit ich dein Auge gesehn; Ich möchte dich an mich pressen Und still im Kuß vergehn. Mein Leben möcht' ich lassen Um ein Lächeln vor dir, Und du - ich kann's nicht fassen - Versagst es mir. Ist's Schicksal, ist's dein Wille? Am fernen Horizonte Erscheint, wie ein Nebelbild, Die Stadt mit ihren Thürmen, In Abenddämmrung gehüllt. Ein feuchter Windzug kräuselt Die graue Wasserbahn; Mit traurigem Tacte rudert Der Schiffer in meinem Kahn. Die Sonne hebt sich noch einmal Leuchtend vom Boden empor, Und zeigt mir jene Stelle, Wo ich das Liebste verlor.
