הגעתי כזר וכזר אני יוצא. חודש מאי היה רחום עלי בשלל זרי פרחים. הנערה דיברה על אהבה, האם אף על נישואים. כעת העולם כה עצוב. הדרך עוטה כסות שלג. איני יכול לבחור את הזמן למסעי. עלי לבדי להתוות את דרכי בחשכה הזאת. צל באור הירח צועד עמי כמלווה. ועל המרבד הלבן אני מחפש את עיקבות חיות הפרא. מדוע אשתהה עד אשר אגורש מכאן? תנו לכלבים הפראיים לנבוח לפני בתי בעליהם. האהבה מחבבת את הנדודים, כך ברא אלוהים, מן האחת אל השניה. לילה טוה אהובתי. לא אפריע את חלומותייך. חבל על מנוחתך. שלא תשמעי את פסיעותיי, ברכות אסגור את הדלת אחריי. ובעוברי אכתוב על שערייך, "לילה טוב", כדי שתוכלי לראות כי חשבתי עלייך.

Der Wind spielt mit der Wetterfahne Auf meines schönen Liebchens Haus. Da dacht' ich schon in meinem Wahne, Sie pfiff' den armen Flüchtling aus. Er hätt' es [ehr]1 bemerken sollen, Des Hauses aufgestecktes Schild, So hätt' er nimmer suchen wollen Im Haus' ein treues Frauenbild. Der Wind spielt drinnen mit den Herzen, Wie auf dem Dach, nur nicht so laut. Was fragen sie nach meinen Schmerzen? Ihr Kind ist eine reiche Braut.

Am Brunnen vor dem Thore Da steht ein Lindenbaum: Ich träumt' in seinem Schatten So manchen süßen Traum. Ich schnitt in seine Rinde So manches liebe Wort; Es zog in Freud' und Leide Zu ihm mich immer fort. Ich mußt' auch heute wandern Vorbei in tiefer Nacht, Da hab' ich noch im [Dunkel]1 Die Augen zugemacht. Und seine Zweige rauschten, Als riefen sie mir zu: Komm her zu mir, Geselle, Hier findst du deine Ruh'! Hab' mich an [jedem]1 Stein gestoßen, So eilt' ich zu der Stadt hinaus; Die Krähen warfen Bäll' und Schloßen Auf meinen Hut von jedem Haus. Wie anders hast du mich empfangen, Du Stadt der Unbeständigkeit! An deinen blanken Fenstern sangen Die Lerch' und Nachtigall im Streit. Die runden Lindenbäume blühten, Die klaren Rinnen rauschten hell, Und ach, zwei Mädchenaugen glühten! - Da war's geschehn um dich, Gesell! בוערת הקרקע מתחת כפות רגליי, למרות שאני כבר דורך על קרח ושלג. איני רוצה לנשום שוב עד אשר יעלמו המגדלים מעיניי. נגפתי בכל אבן בחפזוני לעזוב את העיר. העורבים השליכו שלג וברד על כובעי מעל כל בית. עד כמה קבלת את פניי אחרת, את, עיר של חוסר יציבות. לפני חלונותייך הבוהקים הנעימו הזמיר והעפרוני כמתחרים. עצי התרזה עגולי הנוף פרחו, תעלות המים הצלולות פרפכו ושתי עיני הנערה היו מתנצנצות. וזה, ידידי, היה סופך. כאשר צץ שוב יום זה במחשבותיי, הייתי רוצה פעם אחת להביט לאחור. הייתי רוצה לצלוע בחזרה לעמוד דומם מול ביתה.

אני חש לראשונה עד כמה עיף אני רק עכשו שאני שוכב לנוח. הנדודים רוממו את רוחי בדרכים לא דרכים. רגליי לא בקשו להן מנוח, קר היה מכדי לעמוד. גבי לא חש המעמסה, הסערה המריצתני ללכת הלאה. בביתו הצפוף של כורה פחם אחד מצאתי מחסה, אולם איבריי אינם מוצאים מנוח, כל כך בוערים פצעיהם. ואתא, ליבי, בקרב ובסערה כה פראי הנך ועז, חש לראשונה בדממה את התולעת שבך מתנועעת עם עקצה החם.

Drei Sonnen [sah']1 ich am Himmel stehn, Hab' lang' und fest sie angesehn; Und sie auch standen da so stier, Als [könnten]2 sie nicht weg von mir. Ach, meine Sonnen seid ihr nicht!
