Um Mitternacht, im Schlafe schon, ermuntert mich ein leiser Ton. Ich tu die Fensterladen auf und schaue nacht dem Sternenlauf. Im Waldgebirg der Mond versinkt, die Notenschrift am Himmel blinkt. War das der Klang? Klangt dort das Lied? Die Augen werden wieder müd. Aus halbem Winkel seh ich nur entschwinden eine Silberspur. Ein Engel, der vorüber lief, und wieder sang es, da ich schlief.

"Was traurist, was traurist, arme seele vor Gott?" "Ich han übertreten die zehn Gebot'." Arme Seele mein, komm zu mir ins Paradeis, dann werden deine Kleider ja alle schneeweiß.

Hab gesehn dich irgendwo, sah dich lächeln grade so strahlend eines Rätsels froh. Das verbirgt der Dichtermund schalkhaft-einsam, wohl mit Grund. Wunderinseln sind ihm kund. Hab gespürt wie deine Hand meine so wie heute fand, lange her in anderm Land. Auf der Schwelle in der Luft, vor dem Tor aus Ätherduft, wo die Seele selbst sich ruft. Ist es in dem Dorischen Hain? Sahn wir uns bei Delphis Weihn, schauten da in uns hinein? Ist es wo der Dom ersteht? Wo im Orgelsturm verweht stilles Kerzenlicht-Gebet? Fand an östlicher Zistern', Bethlehem war nicht mehr fern -- unser Hirtenherz den Stern? Immer lächelt noch hervor Weisheit -- doch an diesem Tor, heißt's, stellt man sich heut erst vor.

Gottvater sah gemach ich gehn. Das Frühlicht hielt den Atem an. Ein einfach Ding ihn so zu sehn auf seiner Bahn. Der kleine Sohn zur Seite dicht, und beide schauten Hand in Hand unter dem Wolkenglanzgesicht ins Schattenland. Zusammen Wolke, Vater, Sohn, sie wandeln wie in Melodien dreiniglich getragen von der Gnade hin. Mein Herz, was pochtest du so wild! Und plötzlich sagst du nimmer bang: "Grüß Gott!" Von ihrem Mund mild "Grüß Gott!" es klang.
