De vreeslijke vrede Is lang al bejaard. Door scheiding wij leden, Mijn goede zwaard! Terwijl ik soms proestte, al proevend de wijn, Hing jij te roesten En alleen te zijn. Van wijnsoorten poogde Ik 't al te verstaan, Intussen droogde Het bloed jou aan. Een aanvang genomen Heeft nu de strijd, Mijn zwaard, dus gekomen Is ook jouw tijd. Ik gaf1 aan jouw kling 'n Helblanke schijn, Ik laat jou straks zingen Het doodsrefrein. In rook en zwavel Rumoert de strijd, Wij hebben, o sabel, Elkaar zeer verblijd. Laat most nu maar bruisen, Mijn dorstig metaal, Bedrink je en luister Naar 't hart zijn taal. Terwijl jij je deel had Aan 't rode bloed, Is verdroogd mijn keelgat Door hete gloed.
