Liszt and Rheinberger used modernized spellings (e.g., "ò" in the first line becomes "ho" ; "et" becomes "e") above. Above is the text from Liszt's first version, Leipzig: Breitkopf & Härtel, 1917, with changes described below for his second version. 1 in Liszt's 2nd version (checked with the score published in 1922 by Breitkopf & Härtel, Leipzig), this is "tutto il"2 in Liszt's 2nd version, this is "chiegio"
3 in Liszt's 2nd version, this is "piangendo io rido"
4 in the repetition of this line in Liszt's first version, he names the lady: "In questo stato son per Voi, O Laura, per Voi."

Je ne trouve point de paix et je n'ai pas à faire de guerre ; et je tremble et j'espère, et je brûle, et je suis comme une glace. Je vole au-dessus des cieux et je rampe sur terre ; je n'étreins rien et j'embrasse le monde entier. Celle qui me tient en prison, ne m'ouvre ni ne me ferme la porte ; elle ne me retient point dans ses liens, ni ne m'en délivre ; Amour lui-même ne veut ni me tuer, ni briser mes fers ; ni m'avoir en vie, ni me tirer de peine. Je vois sans yeux ; je n'ai pas de langue et je crie ; je souhaite mourir et je réclame aide ; et je me hais moi-même, et j'aime autrui. Je me repais de douleur ; je ris en pleurant ; la mort et la vie me déplaisent également. Voilà, madame, en quel état je suis à cause de vous.

J'ai vu sur la terre les angéliques manières et les célestes beautés uniques au monde ; si bien qu'à me les rappeler je me réjouis et je souffre ; car en compa- raison, toutes celles que je vois sont rêve, ombre et fumée. Et j'ai vu pleurer ces deux beaux yeux qui mille fois ont rendu le soleil jaloux ; et j'ai entendu sa bouche dire en soupirant des paroles qui feraient se mouvoir les montagnes et s'arrêter les fleuves. Amour, prudence, valeur, pitié et douleur, faisaient de ces pleurs un concert plus doux que tous ceux qu'on entend d'habitude au monde. Et le ciel était si attentif à cette harmonie, qu'on ne voyait pas une feuille s'agiter sur les branches, tant l'air et la brise étaient imprégnés de sa douceur.
