I dreamt that spring had awakened: The trees stood in bright splendour, The sun gazed down so golden, The birdlets sang in the garden; I saw the first flowers blooming, So morning-fresh in the young greenness. How I immediately sprang to the window To greet springtime's realm with rejoicing! Then -- the storm laughed at me jeeringly: You just stay at home with your song! Upon forest and meadow lay deep snow, My sweet dream -- adieu! adieu! And another time I dreamt heavily: The blossoming valley lay covered in snow; The birds had shyly flown away, Evil winter came anew; A dreary fog billowed up, Lay upon the land so uneasily and heavily! And when I awoke sadly -- -- Oh blissful, sunny splendour of spring! The birdlets' singing is ringing out loudly, All of the trees are full of blossoms! The sun is so warm, the air so mild, And the grass blades are sparkling in the morning dew! -- A finch is singing brightly in the garden: Come out, you dreamer, come out immediately; Away with worries, away with sorrow, Winter has vanished and spring has come! Now we laugh at Sir April: Everything must happen as springtime wishes it
