BEERTE In doornte en dorte ik dreef mijn hart Als 't lam door 't duin, Wier wol door 't bos doorkorven werd, Wier hoef door 't puin; - Die hoopt die groene heuvlen daar Zijn fris en zoet, En 't ruist van blijde waatren waar 'k Mijn dorst in boet; En die in ruigt, duin op, duin af, Door droog zand dwaalt: Doorn priemt, braam steekt: hoe stug en straf Is 't helm dat frisheid faalt. 't Breekt door, 't staat hoog, van laatsten wal Stort zonheet zand naar 't blauw - Heil, 'k hoorde - ik zie der waatren val: Daar baad, daar koel 'k mij gauw. Het daalt, het holt, het spelt in 't nat. Ai mij, wat zilte poel. Wier wond schrijnt en wie dorst is 't bad Pijnlijk en bijtend koel. En eenzaam 't dwaalt, en 't blinkend strand Ligt leeg als strand kan zijn. Tot de nacht komt en 't zinkt in 't zand, Ontsterft aan moeite en pijn. JACOBA Dat dolend hart, mijn lief, was al te droef. Een heldrer toon nu, zij 't al niet te hoog.
