The narrator of the novel states that he and his wife visited a castle and found this verse etched into a windowpane, so the verse may be by the author or it may be a quotation of an older poem. In catalogs, Kahn's text is said to be by Gerhardt, but this may be incorrect. There are anthologies with this verse that do not state an author.
Authorship:
- possibly by Paul Gerhardt (1606 - 1676) [author's text checked 1 time against a primary source]
