Jeg hører bekken bruse fram og tilbake i skogen, i skogen, i bruset, Jeg vet ikke hvor jeg er. Nattergalene synger Her i ensomheten, som om de ville fortelle noe fra de vakre gamle dager. Måneskimmeret flyr som om jeg under meg så slottet ligge i dalen, men det er dog så langt herfra! Som om i hagen full av hvite og røde roser min kjæreste ville vente på meg, men hun har dog vært død så lenge.

Hast ein Reh du lieb vor andern, Laß es nicht alleine grasen, Jäger ziehn im Wald und blasen, Stimmen hin und wieder wandern. Hast du einen Freund hienieden, Trau ihm nicht zu dieser Stunde, Freundlich wohl mit Aug' und Munde, Sinnt er Krieg im tück'schen Frieden. Was heut [müde gehet]1 unter, Hebt sich morgen neu geboren.
