Note: some 20th century editions of Eichendorff have "wider" instead of "wieder" in stanza 2, line 4, but "wieder" is prevalent in the editions that came out in the 19th century. (With thanks to Alfred Liebel for pointing this out.)

Il crepuscolo vuole spiegare le ali, tremando si muovono gli alberi, le nubi passano come sogni grevi - che significa questa paura? Se hai un capriolo più caro degli altri, non farlo pascolare da solo, i cacciatori passano nel bosco e suonano, voci vagano qua e là. Se hai un amico quaggiù, non fidarti di lui in quest'ora, è amico col viso e col labbro, ma medita guerra in insidiosa pace. Ciò che oggi stanco tramonta, si leva domani rinato. Qualcosa si perde nella notte - sta' in guardia, sveglio e pronto!
