O frischer Morgen, frischer Mut, Wie will ich euer gedenken! Wer weiß, wird mir ein solches Gut Der Himmel nochmals schenken: Daheim die Meinen treu und lieb, In mir der rege Lebenstrieb, Und über mir die Sterne. Der Morgen löscht [sich langsam]1 aus, Er wirft mit Wind die Bäume; Ich tret' aus dunklem Jägerhaus, Verprustend die kurzen Träume. Es saugt der Mund die frische Luft, Die Brust schlingt herben Waldesduft, Es hofft das Herz, was weiß ich! Da gehn die großen Pläne auf In des Morgens düstrer Frische, Da wirft man Taten und Welten zu Hauf, Fährt grade und quer wie die Fische; Und wenn besorgt der Jäger fragt: Sie sind wohl schlimm und mißbehagt? Ach nein, ich bin nur munter! Und klarer, freier wird der Drang, Je mehr der Tag sich lichtet, Der [Wintervogel]2 versucht Gesang, 'S ist Alles so wohl gerichtet. Herr Gott, in Deinem großen Haus, Wie schwer mag's sein, wie leicht sieht's aus, Hab' Dank für Jagd und Atmen!

Ô matin frais, courage vif, Comme je me souviens de vous ! Qui sait si à moi un tel trésor Le ciel l'enverra une fois de plus : À la maison les miens, fidèles et chers, En moi, un instinct vital et vif, Et au-dessus de moi les étoiles. Le matin éteint lentement les étoiles, Il jette les arbres avec le vent ; J'avance vers la sombre cabane de chasse, M'ébrouant de mes rêves brefs. Ma bouche tète l'air frais, Ma poitrine avale le parfum âcre de la forêt; Mon cœur espère je ne sais quoi ! Comme vont les grands projets Dans la fraîcheur du matin sombre, Ainsi on lance les actions et les rêves en tas, On avance tout droit et de travers comme le poisson; Et si le chasseur inquiet demande : Vous êtes probablement mal et mécontent? Oh non, je suis seulement plein d'entrain ! Et plus clair, plus libre devient l'envie, Plus le jour se lève. L'oiseau d'hiver essaie son chant, Tout est si bien ordonné.
