In einer Dämmrung, nah vor Morgenrot,
Ging ich im feuchten Dunste durch das Land,
Tau meine Krone, Nebel das Gewand,
Wegweiser in mir meine arge Not.
Sie führte mich an einer Erdkluft Rand,
In deren Tiefen brütete der Tod,
Aus deren Tiefe, dunkelrot umloht,
Schöpfte das Elend Schmerzen Hand um Hand.
Und Tod und Elend mühten sich vor Tag,
Um neu zu rüsten die bestimmten Qualen,
So wie der Fluch auf mir und allen lag.
Und ich ging weinend in den ersten Strahlen der Sonne,
Weh, die nicht verlöschen mag,
Und ging, mein Teil der großen Schuld zu zahlen.

Dans la lueur de l'aube, un peu avant le lever du soleil,
Je marchais dans la brume humide à travers la campagne,
La rosée était ma couronne, le brouillard ma cape,
Le guide était ma profonde détresse.
Il me conduisit au bord d'un abîme,
Dans ses profondeurs la mort couvait,
De ses profondeurs, en flammes rouge sombre,
La misère prenait les souffrances, main dans la main.
Et la mort et la misère se donnaient de la peine avant le jour,
Pour préparer à nouveau les tourments décidés,
Suivant la malédiction jetée sur moi et sur les autres.
Et j'allais pleurant dans les premiers rayons du soleil,
Malheur, qu'il ne puisse jamais être éteint,
Et j'allais pour payer ma part de la grande faute.
