O sieh ihn weinen, beten, knien:
herb ist der Kelch: doch trinkt er ihn.
Schau hin! wenn einst das Grab dich schreckt
und kalter Schweiß die Stirn bedeckt:
sein Trauren, seine Qual,
sein Flehn, sein Ringen mit dem Tod
versüß dir deine letzte Not.

e lotta con agonia.
O vederlo piangere, pregare, in ginocchio:
amaro è il calice: ma lo beve.
Guardate! Quando un giorno la tomba ti spaventerà
e sudore freddo ti coprirà la fronte:
il suo pianto, il suo tormento,
le sue preghiere, le sue lotte con la morte
addolciranno per te l'ultima angoscia.
