J’ai l’expérience d’un amour indéfectible —qui le fut aussi longtemps que je m’y retrouvai— qui, toujours conciliant, et avec une constance sans illusion, s’est attaché à moi. C’est l’amour de celui qui a bu jadis avec une patience céleste l’amertume de l’amer breuvage de mort, a été suspendu à la Croix et a expié ma faute jusqu’à ce qu’elle fût engloutie dans une mer de Grâce. Mais que se passe-t-il maintenant, que je sois triste et dans l’angoisse au point de me tordre par terre ? J’interroge : veilleur, la nuit sera-t-elle bientôt passée ? Et puis : qu’est-ce qui me sauvera de la mort et du péché ? Mauvais coeur ! Allez, avoue-le tu as à nouveau accueilli en toi des désirs coupables ; pieux amour, fervent vestige de fidélité, ah, tout cela est depuis longtemps bien dépassé ! Bien sûr que c’est ainsi : je suis triste et dans l’angoisse au point de me tordre par terre. Veilleur, veilleur la nuit sera-t-elle bientôt passée ? Et qu’est ce qui me sauvera de la mort et du péché ?
