Luften tung och dagen varm. Hed jag haft att vandra, gossen på min ena arm, harpan på min andra harpan trött vid strängalåt, sonen trött vid sanddjup stråt. Hvila godt jag unnar harpan och min Gunnar. Nu en milsvid tempelsal, byggd af gran och furu, öppnar sig med skugga sval och jag lyssnar, huru bäcken sorlar klar och ren, siskan kvittrar på sin gren, furudunklet nunnar för min lille Gunnar. Dagen dör, en fuktig vind andas öfver tegen, och min gosses väna kind lutas mot min egen. Mörknad himmels stjärnebloss blinka: Gunnar, kom till oss! Ljufva änglamunnar hviska: du vår Gunnar! Utur ödesdjupen fram många källor välla. en är bittert hälsosam: det är sorgens källa. Väl jag vet, du käre vän, att du dricka skall ur den, men för lastens brunnar gud beskydde Gunnar! Granen växte stark och rak, och hon vedergällde under snöbetungadt tak den, som henne fällde mildt med brasans ljus och glöd. Kraftig växt och ädel död, ber jag, Gud förunnar sångarbarnet Gunnar.

L'air est lourd, le jour est chaud J'ai dû cheminer par la lande mon garçon sur un bras ma harpe sur l'autre ma harpe fatiguée par le son de ses cordes, mon garçon fatigué par la route sablonneuse. J'accorderais bien du repos à ma harpe et à mon Gunnar. Maintenant la salle immense d'un temple construit de sapins et de pins s'ouvre sur une obscure fraîcheur, et j'écoute comment le ruisseau murmure, clair et pur, le tarin gazouille sur sa branche, le sombre pin fredonne pour mon petit Gunnar. Le jour s'évanouit, un vent moite souffle sur le champ et la tendre joue de mon garçon s'appuie sur la mienne. Dans le ciel ténébreux, le flambeau des étoiles scintille : « Gunnar viens à nous ! » De leurs bouches suaves les anges murmurent : « toi, notre Gunnar ! » Du sein de la destinée maintes sources émergent. Il en est une amèrement salutaire : c'est la source de tristesse. Je sais par trop, mon cher ami, que tu y boiras, mais des sources du vice, que Dieu protège Gunnar ! Le sapin avait poussé fort et droit, et avec indulgence il a rétribué sous le toit couvert de neige celui qui l'avait abattu avec la lumière et les braises de son feu. Vigoureuse croissance et noble mort, je prie Dieu de les réserver à Gunnar, le petit chanteur.
