Trost
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): CAT DUT ENG FRE
Hörnerklänge rufen klagend
Aus des Forstes grüner Nacht,
In das Land der Liebe tragend
Waltet ihre Zaubermacht.
Selig, wer ein Herz gefunden,
Das sich liebend ihm ergab,
Mir ist jedes Glück entschwunden,
Denn die Teure deckt das Grab.
Tönen aus des Waldes Gründen
Hörnerklänge an mein Ohr,
Glaub ich wieder sie zu finden,
Zieht es mich zu ihr empor!
Jenseits wird sie mir erscheinen,
Die sich liebend mir ergab,
O welch seliges Vereinen,
Keine Schrecken hat das Grab.
Note: Schubert received Mayrhofer's texts in handwriting. This poem does not appear in any printed edition of Mayrhofer's poems. Schubert wrote only the first stanza into his manuscript, but put a repeat sign at the end. The text of the second stanza is taken from the first edition of the song; it cannot be confirmed that it does originate from Mayrhofer.

Solace
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Dirgelike hunting calls are sounding
From the night's green wooded hill;
They have magic power to bear us
Into love's domain at will.
Lucky he who finds a heart
To give itself to him in love;
All that joy for me is over,
Lying buried in her grave.
From the inmost forest depth
The horncalls' wisdom reassures
Me I shall find my love again,
My soul be drawn aloft by hers.
She who gave me her devotion
Yonder once more I shall see:
Blest reunion! My own dying
Holds no terror now for me.
