Du in der dunkeln Wolke, du Gott der Zeit!
Zu wild, zu bang ist's ringsum, und es
Trümmert und wankt ja, wohin ich blicke.
Ach! wie ein Knabe, seh' ich zu Boden oft,
Such' in der Höhle Rettung von dir, und möcht',
Ich Blöder, eine Stelle finden,
Alleserschütt'rer! wo du nicht wärest.
Laß endlich, Vater! offenen Aug's mich dir
Begegnen! hast denn du nicht zuerst den Geist
Mit deinem Strahl aus mir geweckt? mich
Herrlich ans Leben gebracht, o Vater! -
Wohl keimt aus jungen Reben uns heil'ge Kraft;
In milder Luft begegnet den Sterblichen,
Und wenn sie still im Haine wandeln,
Heiternd ein Gott; doch allmächt'ger weckst du
Die reine Seele Jünglingen auf, und lehrst
Die Alten weise Künste; der Schlimme nur
Wird schlimmer, daß er bälder ende,
Wenn du, Erschütterer! ihn ergreifest.

Voilà trop longtemps que tu règnes sur moi,
dieu du temps, dans la sombre nuée !
Trop de férocité, trop d’anxiété autour de moi,
tout se délite et vacille, où que mes yeux se posent.
Ah ! Souvent, comme un enfant, je regarde par terre,
cherchant dans une anfractuosité à me garder de toi
et je voudrais trouver, stupide que je suis, un endroit
où tu ne soies pas, toi le Ravageur !
Laisse-moi enfin, Père, venir à toi les yeux
grands ouverts ! N’as-tu pas éveillé en moi
l’esprit par ton éclair ?
Ne m’as-tu pas magnifiquement appelé à la vie, ô Père ?
Une sainte vigueur nous vient des jeunes pampres ;
quand les mortels parcourent paisiblement la campagne sous
la douce haleine de la brise, un dieu apaisant vient
à leur devant ; mais toi tu éveilles plus puissamment encore
l’âme pure des adolescents, et tu enseignes
aux anciens la sagesse par les arts ; il n’y a que le mal
qui accroisse le mal, mais disparait bientôt,
quand tu l’empoignes, toi le Ravageur !
