Bergmannsreichthum
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Der Bergmann ist ein armer Mann
Und doch dabei so reich,
Weil er dem Glück entsagen kann,
Wie Keiner wohl von euch.
Durch Kammern geht er aus und ein,
Wo Schatz auf Schatz gehäuft,
Und funkelnd durch das Felsgestein
Das Goldgeäder läuft.
Allein mit Gleichmuth sieht sein Blick
Den Reichthum rings umher,
Und niemals schmäht er sein Geschick
Wenn auch der Säckel leer.
Denn eines Schatzes jederzeit
Ist er sich froh bewußt,
Und dieß ist die Genügsamkeit
In sorgenfreier Brust.
Doch was in euch den Neid erregt

Miner's wealth
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
The miner is a poor man
And yet at the same time so wealthy,
Because he can abjure happiness
Like none of you likely can.
He passes in and out of chambers
In which treasure upon treasure is piled up,
And where sparkling through the granite rocks
Run the veins of gold.
He, however, gazes with equanimity
Upon the wealth all around him,
And he never rails against his fate
Even if his purse is empty.
For at all times he is
Joyfully aware of a single treasure,
And that is contentment
Housed in a bosom free of care.
For what in you arouses jealousy
And lames your cheerfulness,
What moves your hearts to avarice,
All that is foreign to the miner.
Therefore he accomplishes all that he can
With the strokes of his sledgehammer,
And, although a poor man, he is
Also rich as few are.
