Das ist nicht Zeit, die in mein Ohr dringt.
Da ist ein Glänzender, der machtvoll singt.
Über meine Augen Wolken ziehn,
o Luft und weite Wolken!
Das nimmt mich ganz in die Heimat hin.
Einen Adler hör' ich rauschend folgen;
und Höhn und Tiefen sind voll Melodien.
Ich schau' ein Haupt, schau' in ein Auge.
In diesem Auge flammt eine neue große Fackel.
Ich greife nach der Fackel --
-- "Vielleicht glückt es: du verirrst dich im Feuer,
-- "und gelangst in die Urschlucht des Daseins" . . .

It is not Time that penetrates my ear.
It is a radiant one who sings powerfully.
Clouds move across my eyes,
oh breeze and broad clouds!
That takes me utterly into my homeland.
I hear an eagle following with a rushing [of wings];
and heights and depths are full of melodies.
I see a head, gaze into an eye.
In this eye a new great torch flames.
I reach for the torch --
-- “Perhaps you shall succeed: shall lose your way in the fire,
-- “and reach the primeval chasm of existence" . . .
