Wieviel Sonnenstrahlen fielen goldenschwer,
fielen feurig glühend in des ew'ge Meer!
Und die Woge sog sie tief in sich hinab,
und die Woge ward ihr wild lebendig Grab.
Nur in stiller Nächte heilger Feierstund'
sprühen diese Strahlen aus des Meeres Grund.
Leuchtend roll'n die Wogen durch die dunkle Nacht
wunderbar durchglüht sie funkensprüh'nde Pracht.

Sont tombés brillants comme le feu dans la mer éternelle !
Et les vagues les ont sucés en elles-mêmes dans les profondeurs,
Et les vagues sont devenues leurs tombes sauvagement vivantes.
Seulement dans le saint crépuscule de la nuit silencieuse
Ces rayons étincellent dans les profondeurs de la mer,
Les vagues roulent incandescentes à travers la nuit sombre
Merveilleusement la splendeur étincelante brille à travers elles.
