O God, give me deliverance From that deadly man; Preserve me from the harm Of that malicious man. He and those who are like him Are stirring up in their hearts a thousand evils And prepare and gather every day New struggles with me. Their false, harmful tongues They sharpen like a serpent, And beneath their poisonous lips A snake’s venom spreads. Keep me from the cruel hand Of the wicked man, preserve my steps From the harmful, who by trickery Seek to throw me down. The proud have with subtlety spread Their traps and nets for me; Since I have said in firm faith You are my God, o Eternal one, Be pleased to give audience To my cry, God of heaven. God, my master and my strong armoury To protect me from every mischief, It is you who in the day of alarms Covered and protected my head. Do not grant to the wicked who trouble me, O Lord, the outcome of their desires; And do not suffer them to raise themselves, Bringing to an end their pleasures. May the chief of that company Which encloses me receive Upon himself the pain and trouble Which his tongue has made me have. May hot coals fall on their heads, May God destroy them so utterly With his thunderous tempest That they can never recover. The man who is troublesome in his language Will not be established on the earth, And the man who is given to causing trouble, The evil he does will pursue him. I know that God will give justice To him who is afflicted, And he who gives injustice to the pure Will one day be judged by him. Truly, the just shall sing out Your name full of excellence, Lord, And forever in your presence The righteous shall live.
