Frieden der Nacht
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Der Tag ist längst geschieden. --
[Von]1 dem Sternenzelt
Sinkt tiefer, [heil'ger]2 Frieden
Herab auf Haus und Feld.
Auf müde Augen linde
Legt süßen Schlaf die Nacht;
Im Kämmerlein beim Kinde
Hält Gottes Engel Wacht.
Schon hat sein Lied gesungen
Das Kindlein sanft zur Ruh';
Die Saiten sind verklungen,
Nun deckt er's leise zu.

Nocturnal peace
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
The day has long since departed. --
[From]1 the starry canopy
Deep, holy peace descends
Upon house and field.
Upon weary eyes the night
Gently lays sweet sleep;
In the little chamber beside the child
The angel of God keeps watch.
[The angel] has already gently lulled
The child to rest with song;
The strings have fallen silent,
Now [the angel] quietly draws the covers over the child.
