Us vull cantar, en una antiga tonada, una cançó de la vella fidelitat; els nostres pares ja la cantaven, però ara és nova per als amants. Ens alegra en la benaurança, i ens pot reconfortar en la fretura: que res ha de separar els cors, res els pot separar excepte la mort. Que sempre amb renovat coratge el marit ha de protegir la seva estimada, i sacrificar-ho tot, els béns i la sang, si la seva esposa ho necessita. Que en l’ample món no cobegi ningú més que ella sola, que amb la suor dels seu front la nodreixi per al seu bes; que quan l’alosa canti als camps, la seva dona li somrigui en la benaurança, a ell, quan el terreny només dóna espines i quan el treball esdevé un joc, i que el goig del descans sigui doblement dolç, cada àpat vigoritzant, que la pena sigui lleugera al cor, i dolça la seva mort. Llavors sentirà que ella estreny la seva freda mà, i marxarà vers la nova pàtria allunyant-se dels seus braços.
