No, I am not going to fight this battle any longer, The gigantic battle of duty. If you cannot deaden the blazing urge of the heart, Do not demand this sacrifice, oh virtue. I have sworn, yes, I have sworn To control myself. Here is your (laurel) wreath, I am prepared to lose it forever, Take it back and let me sin. Goddess, look at me here on the steps of your throne Where I recently lay as an impudent petitioner, Let my over-hasty oath be recalled, Let the awful contract be declared void, The contract which, in sweet frenzy during a heated moment, You extracted from this dreamer, In unauthorised alliance with my hot blood You wrung it deceitfully from my breast. Where are the fires which streamed through me like electricity, and where is the strong, bold talisman? In this demented state of mind I shall stick to what I swore for you, Something that I did with such recklessness. Let us now tear up what you and I committed ourselves to, She loves me - your crown is now forfeit. Happy is he who, having been buried in the drunkenness of delight, Can recover as easily as I from such a deep fall. She can see the worm gnawing at the flower of my youth, And that my spring has fled, She is silently amazed at my heroically courageous renunciation And full of generosity she decides on my reward. Beautiful soul, distrust this angelic goodness! Your sympathy prepares me to be a criminal. In the immeasurable realm of life is there, Is there any more beautiful reward than You? Than the crime which I have always wanted to flee? Appalling fate! The single reward that my virtue should crown Is the last moment of my virtue! Full of poison that is rich in sensuality - forgetting The one before whom I have to tremble, In silence I dare to press her to my breast, My first kiss burns on her lips, At this almightily glowing touch how quicky, How quickly Laura tore Away the weak seal on those hasty oaths, Escaping from the tyrannical chains of your duty, She now rang the bell announcing the long begged for hour of bucolic delight, Now was the dawn of my happiness - Yielding trembled on your burning mouth, Yielding swam in your tearful gaze, I was awstruck at such imminent delight, And I did not achieve it. My courage faltered in the face of your divinity, I was in such a fervour! and I did not achieve it! Where did this trembling come from, this nameless horror, When your lovely arms embraced me? - Because your oath, which had already injured you with all its power, Was confining you within alien shackles? Because a custom, which was stamped as holy by law, Considered what was an accident to be a serious offence? No - I was unafraid to defy an alliance Which blushing nature regretted. Oh, do not tremble - you were a sinner when you swore, The pious duty of repentance is to break an oath. That heart which you lost in front of the altar was mine, Heaven does not play with human joys. Let it be summoned to the battle against annihilation, Whatever it was that bound you to your solemn oath. Prudence can do without an overflowing spirit, For which it has created no happiness. Separated from you - why did I come into being? God created me because YOU exist! Let him recant, or learn to kill spirits, And flee from me in the face of ridicule from his worm. Gentlest of feeling demons, Does human madness distort you, turning you into a brute? Should you repay my agonies like this, With this Nero praying to spirits? Would they have praised you as the best of all beings, And portrayed me as a father? Are you therefore going wild with this paradise? Are you repaying yourself with my tears? Do you feel captivated by bleeding renunciation? Is it only through hell That you can capture a bridge to your heaven? Does nature only take notice of you because of torture? Oh, let us lock up our temple to THAT god, Let no songs of praise celebrate him, And let no more tears of joy flow, He has been paid in full forever!
