Die Hirten an der Krippe
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Gotteskind, wir beten dich an,
denn du bist Christus, Gottes Sohn,
dass du verlassen den Himmelsthron,
nur aus Liebe hast du's getan.
Als wir wachten in stiller Nacht,
kam ein Engel licht und schön,
hat uns aus den ew'gen Höh'n
diese Kunde des Heils gebracht.
Gotteskind, Erlöser der Welt,
Licht, das alles Dunkel erhellt,
Trost und Balsam für Leid und Qual,
sei gegrüßt viel tausendmal.
Was wir gehofft, es hat sich erfüllt,
zu uns stieg nieder Gottes Wort.
Du nimmst den Stachel der Armut fort,
heil'ge Sehnsucht, sie wird gestillt.
Welch ein Lohn wird dem Vertrau'n,
welch ein Glück wird uns zuteil,
dich, das längst verheiß'ne Heil,
jetzt mit eignem Blick zu schau'n.
Gotteskind, Erlöser der Welt,
Licht, das alles Dunkel erhellt,
Trost und Balsam für Leid und Qual,
sei gegrüßt viel tausendmal.

The shepherds at the manger
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Godchild, we worship Thee,
For Thou art Christ, the Son of God;
That Thou hast left the throne of Heaven,
Thou didst so only for love.
As we were keeping watch in the quiet night,
An angel, bright and beautiful, came [and]
From the eternal heights
Brought us this message of salvation.
Godchild, Saviour of the world,
Light that brightens all darkness,
Comfort and balm for suffering and agony,
We bring you many thousand greetings.
What we had hoped for has come to be,
God’s Word descended to us.
Thou takest away the thorn of poverty,
Holy yearning -- it is stilled.
What a recompense trust receives,
What a happiness comes to us,
Now to see Thee, the long promised salvation,
With our own eyes.
Godchild, Saviour of the world,
Light that brightens all darkness,
Comfort and balm for suffering and agony,
We bring you many thousand greetings.
