Im Feld ein Mädchen singt...
Vielleicht ist ihr Liebster gestorben,
Vielleicht ist ihr Glück verdorben,
Dass ihr Lied so traurig klingt.
Das Abendrot verglüht,
Die Weiden stehn und schweigen,
Und immer noch so eigen
Tönt fern das traurige Lied.
Der letzte Ton verklingt.
Ich möchte zu ihr gehen.
Wir müssten uns wohl verstehen,
Da sie so traurig singt.
Das Abendrot verglüht,
Die Weiden stehn und schweigen.
R. Stöhr sets stanzas 1-3

In the field a maiden is singing
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
In the field a maiden is singing...
perhaps her beloved has died,
perhaps her happiness is ruined,
for her song sounds so desolate.
The sunset is fading,
the willows stand silent,
and ever so unique,
that far-off, mournful song resounds.
The last note fades away.
I wish to go to her.
Surely we would understand each other,
for she sings so plaintively.
The sunset is fading,
the willows stand silent.
