Gruß vom Meere
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Sei mir gegrüßt in deiner Pracht,
Schwarzdunkles Meer!
Seid mir gegrüßt in dunkler Nacht,
Ihr Sterne um mich her!
Das Meer schäumt hoch am Felsenriff,
Die Sterne blinken hell;
Die Fluten teilet unser Schiff
Und segelt fort gar schnell.
Und dort, wo jener Stern erglüht,
Dort ist das ferne Land,
Wo einst mir Lieb und Lust erblüht
An ihrer schönen Hand.
Und denkt sie meiner auch nicht mehr,
So denk' ich ihrer doch
Und sende über Fels und Meer
Ihr tausend Grüße noch.

Greetings from the sea
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
I greet you in all your splendor,
Deep black sea!
I greet you in dark of night,
You stars about me!
The sea crashes against the stony reef,
The stars shine brightly;
Our ship cleaves the flood
And swiftly sails on.
And yonder near that glowing star,
There is the distant land,
Where once love and bliss bloomed for me
At her lovely hand.
And though she no longer thinks of me,
I still remember her
And send, across the rocks and sea,
A thousand greetings yet.
