Hoffnung
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG ITA
Aria
Hoffe nur, geplagtes Herze,
daß der Himmel nach dem Schmerze
dich auch einst erfreuen kann!
Weg mit ängstichen Gebärden!
Der Verhängnis lässt mich nicht
meiner Feinde Hohnlied werden,
und ich höre, dass es spricht:
Dir wird nächstens wohlgetan.
Recitative
Die Hoffnung stürzt mich noch,
sonst läg ich wirklich schon;
ihr angehnemer Ton
verstopft mein Ohr
vor jener bittern Melodie,
mit der die Grillen
bei der verdrüssliche Melancholie
so Kopf als Herze füllen.
Lass sein, mein Glücke wankt;
draus folgt nicht, dass es fällt;
die Hoffnung, die mich stets
mit starken Armen hält,
entreisst mich der Gefahr,
von der ich ohne sie
nicht zu befreien war.
Aria
Mein Glücke nimmt sich Zeit,
drum lass ich mir's gefallen;
es komme wenn es kommt,
so nehm ich's freudig an.
Kommt es nicht heute,
so kommt es doch morgen;
der Himmel wird mich doch versorgen;
er weiss schon, dass ich warten kann.

Hope
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Aria
Tormented heart, hope that
After pain, you may enjoy
Heaven one day!
Away with your frightened attitude!
Destiny won’t allow me
To be the target of my enemy’s scorn,
And I hear it say to me:
It will be well for you in the future.
Recitative
Hope still strengthens me,
Otherwise I would yet be lying down;
Its comforting sound
Has blocked from my ear
Every bitter melody,
With which the crickets
Of annoying sadness
Might fill my head and my heart.
Let it be, my good fortune wavers;
But it doesn’t follow that it should be so;
Hope, which always holds me
With powerful arms,
Protects me from dangers
And without it,
I could not be free.
Aria
My good fortune takes its time,
Thus, I am pleased to allow it to happen;
It comes when it comes,
So, I gladly welcome it.
If it does not arrive today,
It will certainly arrive tomorrow;
Heaven will indeed provide;
It already knows that I am able to wait.
