Language: Russian (Русский)
Available translation(s): ENG
И я твой мрамор вопрошал;
Хвалу стране прочел я дальной;

The Bakhchysarai Palace fountain
Language: English  after the Russian (Русский)
Fountain of love, fountain of life!
I brought an offering to you, two roses.
I love your ceaselessly murmuring voice
And poetic tears.
Your silvery dust
Settles on me like cold dewdrops:
Ah, flow, flow, [in your] comforting way!
Babble, babble [a tale of the] past to me...
Fountain of love, fountain of sorrow!
I asked your marble [lips];
I heard tales in praise of distant lands;
But about Maria you have been silent...
The pale light of the harem!
Out here, are you oblivious [to it]?
Or [are] Mary and Zarema
Only happy dreams?
Or [is this] only an imaginary dream
Of the desert, I pictured in the darkness:
Your momentary visions,
My soul's ephemeral ideal?
Translator's note: Bakhchysarai is a town near the Black Sea on the Crimean peninsula. Pushkin’s poem refers to the “Fountain of Tears” - image here [wikipedia]
