A Bua, der von sein Schatz muas fort,
sagt Dirnd'l, i bleib' dein,
denn's Herzl is a kloaner Ort,
's hat oane Platz nur drein.
Damit dir aber koaner nit
ins Herzl schleicht hinein,
so nimm i mir des deine mit
und lass' dir davor 's mein.
So lang's di sticht und druckt und schier
vonanda springa möcht,
so woaßt, i hab dei Herzl dir
erhalten treu und echt.
An den erkenn' a i, ob's du
mir gut no bist und treu,
denn gibt dir oamal 's Herz a Ruh',
is's mit der Liab vorbei.
D'rum, Dirnd'l, denk fein oft an mi,
und wann's dir oamal g'schicht,
dass's Herzl nimma druckt als wie
vorher, und nimma sticht,
dann bet' zum liaben Gott für mi
und woan dir d'Aug'n nit aus,
denn dann erwart' mei Dirnd'l i
dort drob'n im Vadahaus.

The Heart
Language: English  after the German (Lower Austrian)
A lad that has to leave his beloved
says to his lass: I stay thine,
because the heart is a small place,
there's room for one only.
But so that no other boy
slips in there,
I'll take thine heart with me
in exchange for my own.
As long as it stings and presses
and is always about to come asunder,
you will know that I have preserved
your heart faithful and true.
And I too may take this as proof
that you are still faithful to me,
for, should it sometime be at peace,
our love will have come to an end.
Therefore, lassie, think often of me,
and should it come to pass
that the heart doesn't press as it
has done before, and doesn't sting any more,
then pray for me to god, our Lord,
and don't cry,
for I shall be waiting for my lass
above in heaven, in our Father's house.
