I met her one day during crush, Her skirt hitched up and her cute feet, A splash of yellow around her neck and her hair in a twist, The body of a bacchante and the eyes of an angel. Hanging off the arm of her sweetheart, I met her in the fields near Avignon, One day during crush. * * * I met her one day during crush, The landscape was dreary and the sky ablaze. She was walking alone and trembling, Her eyes flickered with a strange fire I still shiver when I remember When I saw you, dear white phantom, One day during crush. * * * I met her one day during crush, And I still dream about it almost every day: . . . . . . . . . . . The coffin was covered in velvet, The black pall was trimmed with a double fringe The [Holy] Sisters of Avignon were all in tears. The vines were too heavy with grapes Love had reaped this harvest.
Translator's note about the title: Crush is the harvest season for vineyards, when grapes are cut from vines, sorted, and pressed to extract the juice for winemaking.
