Muttergotteskirchlein
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
In mächt'ger Linden Schatten
Ein einsam Kirchlein steht,
Auf grünen Bergesmatten
Von Himmelsluft umweht.
Es grüßt aus einer Blende
Ein Muttergottesbild,
Es segnen still die Hände
Der Mutter hold und mild.
Und wie die Glocken klingen
Hinab zum Thalesgrund,
Sie Muttergrüße bringen
Den Herzen weh und wund.
Mir ist, als ob sie riefen
Hinauf ans Mutterherz
Die Herzen all', die schliefen,
Die Sorge und den Schmerz.
Und mancher, der gekommen
Zur Mutter hold und mild,
Ihm ward sein Weh genommen
Vor'm heil'gen Gnadenbild.
Und mancher, der gekommen,
Das Herz von Sünden wund,
Er kehret liebentglommen
Hinab zum Thalesgrund.
Gegrüßt im Lindenschatten,
O einsam Kirchlein du,
Auf grünen Bergesmatten,
Voll hehrer Himmelsruh'!

Little church of the Mother of God
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
In the shadow of the mighty linden trees
Stands a solitary little church,
Upon the green mountain meadows
Wafted about with heavenly breezes.
From out of a frame one is greeted
By an image of the Mother of God,
The hands of the lovely and gentle Mother
Bless us silently.
And as the bells ring
Down to the depths of the valley,
They bring the Mother’s greetings
To hearts that are woeful and sore.
It seems to me as if they are
Calling up to the Mother’s heart
All the sleeping hearts,
[All] the anxiety and the pain.
And many a one who came
To the Mother lovely and gentle,
His woe was taken from him
Before the holy image of mercy.
And many a one who came,
With a heart sore with sins,
He returned down to the depths
Of the valley enflamed with [devout] love.
Be hailed in the linden trees’ shadow,
Oh ye solitary little church,
Upon the green mountain meadows,
Full of lofty heavenly peace!
