Nachts um die zwölfte Stunde Verläßt der Tambour sein Grab, Macht mit der Trommel die Runde, Geht wirbelnd auf und ab. Mit seinen entfleischten Armen Rührt er die Schlägel zugleich; Schlägt manchen guten Wirbel, [Reveille]1 und Zapfenstreich. Die Trommel klinget seltsam, Hat gar einen starken Ton, Die alten todten Soldaten Erwachen im Grabe davon. Und die im tiefen Norden Erstarrt in Schnee und Eis, Und die in Welschland liegen, Wo ihnen die Erde zu heiß; Und die der Nilschlamm decket Und der [arabische]2 Sand, Sie steigen aus [ihren]3 Gräbern Und nehmen's Gewehr zur Hand. Der Mond mit gelbem Lichte Erhellt den weiten Plan, Der Mann im kleinen Hütchen Sieht sich die Truppen an. Die Reihen präsentiren Und schultern das Gewehr, Dann zieht mit klingendem Spiele [Vorüber]5 das ganze Heer. Die [Marschälle]6 und Generale Schließen um ihn [einen]7 Kreis, Der Feldherr sagt dem Nächsten Ins Ohr ein [Wörtchen]8 leis'; Das Wort geht in die Runde, Klingt wieder fern und nah! »Frankreich« [ist]9 die Parole, Die Losung: »[Helena]10«. Les nits, quan toquen les dotze, el timbaler surt de la tomba, fa la ronda amb el tambor i va redoblant amunt i avall. Amb els seus braços descarnats, bat ensems les baquetes, i toca ben bé a diana i retreta. El timbal sona estrany, té un so molt fort que fa despertar a la tomba els vells soldats morts. I els que són al nord llunyà, enrigidits en la neu i el glaç, i els que són a Itàlia on la terra és massa calenta; i els que estan coberts del fang del Nil i per la sorra d’Aràbia, surten de llurs tombes agafant els fusells. Llavors, damunt corsers airosos, arriben els cavallers morts, els vells esquadrons sanguinaris, amb tota mena d’armes. I quan toquen les dotze, el general surt de la seva tomba, arriba cavalcant lentament, rodejat amb la seva plana major; ell porta un petit capell, un vestit senzill, i una petita espasa penjada al seu costat. La lluna, amb una llum groguenca, il·lumina la vasta plana, l’home amb el petit capell passa revista a les tropes. Les files presenten les armes i les carreguen a l’espatlla, després, amb toc de timbal, desfila tot l’exèrcit.
