Alla fonte sedeva il fanciullo, intrecciava fiori per una ghirlanda, e vide che questa se andava via, travolta nella danza delle onde. "Così fuggono i miei giorni, come la fonte, via senza posa! E così impallidisce la mia gioventù, come le ghirlande presto sfioriscono! Non domandatemi perché sono triste nel tempo fiorito della vita! Tutto è gioia e speranza, quando si rinnova la primavera. Ma mille voci della natura che si ridesta svegliano nel profondo del mio petto solo cupo affanno. Che può giovare la gioia della bella primavera? Una sola c'è, che io cerco, è vicina e sempre lontana. Con desiderio stendo le braccia verso la cara immagine d'ombra, ahimè, che non posso raggiungerla e il cuore non si consola! Vieni qui, dolcezza mia, e lascia il tuo fiero castello! Fiori, nati dalla primavera, spargo nel tuo grembo. Ascolta, il boschetto risuona di canti, e la fonte scorre lieta! C'è posto nella più piccola capanna per una coppia felice che si ama."
