Solo: Friends, assemble in a circle, Enjoy yourselves in the way our fathers did, Join together in loud jubilation. Friendship offers the cup of happiness; For the pleasure of the cheerful drinker The golden wine sparkles like pearls. Chorus: In this celebratory hour lock your Hands together as a loyal alliance. Friends, agree joyfully, Let us all be brothers! Solo: Friendship, creator of joys, You sweeten our sufferings Through gentle sympathy; When dangers surround us, In the storms of misfortune you lead us Safely on our path to our destination. Chorus: When hypocrites spitefully complain to us, When impudent enemies want to destroy us, From the hatred and mockery of persecution We are strongly protected both by friendship and by God. Solo: We are all languishing for love, Drawn on by gentle drives, We are panting for the pleasure of life. Just as transfigured bodies attract A tendency towards sympathy In similar beings breast to breast. Chorus: Drink from the chalice of love At the great communion, Its refreshment is so sweet, It entices us into Paradise! Solo: In the labyrinths of fate We want to suffer, strive, seek, find, With strength and courage. Oh nature! You gave human beings Much that is good, what they want To achieve might not be good. Chorus: The golden sun wakes us happily So that we can enjoy the bliss of life, The moonlight cradles us gently In the lap of rest. Solo: Everybody should live! Drink from the heavenly juice of the grape Which creates in us a blazing desire to do deeds! Never far away from games of love And delight in high spirits, The spirit's divine power takes care of us. Chorus: In the harmony of joys, Merry strings rejoice in unison, Through the veins of nature, All that flows is a stream of joy. Solo: Dry your tears, silence your sighs, Fulfil the wishes of anxious longing, Your unhappiness is tenderly and gently soothed, Innocence is released from the chains of persecutors, Sufferers are saved from distress, And we are already made in the image of God. Chorus: Divine joys create well-being, The heavy pain of poor victims And their hard lot is made easier, Which is so heavenly good and great! Solo: Friends at this celebration of our union You remain unforgettably dear to us! Follow the call of nature! Fulfillment in life Is something we should strive for with all our might On the rosy path of wisdom. Chorus: In this hour of celebration join Hands with your friends in alliance, Join together in loud jubilation, Let us all be brothers!
