[Sind]1 heute dreiunddreißig Jahr, [Seit]2 ich kein Segel sah, Es steht der Turm unwandelbar, Die Kett' ist ewig da. Sie haben gemauert [den]3 Delphin, In lichtlos Felsgestein Und unerreichbar über ihn Ein [winzig]4 Fensterlein. Nicht daß ich fern von Licht und Tag, Macht mir das Herz so schwer, Als daß ich dich nicht zu schau'n vermag, [Mein]5 heiliges blaues Meer! Ich höre nicht, wie die Brandung rollt Und keiner Möve Geschrill, Und wenn die Kette nicht rasseln wollt', [So wär' es totenstill]6. Nicht daß ich sterbe Zoll um Zoll, Macht mir das Herz so schwer, Als daß ich auf dir nicht sterben soll, [Mein]8 oft bezwungenes Meer. Die [Segel]11 hängt das Schiff im Leid, Ein schwarzes verwittwetes Weib, Die Flagge deckt als Sterbekleid Den toten Heldenleib. Er sinkt ins Meer [von der Spiegelwand]12, Das bebt voll heiliger Scheu. - Mich aber scharren sie in den Sand Und schießen nicht einmal dabei! Oggi sono trentatre anni che io non vedo una vela, la torre nonsi muove, la catena è sempre qua. Hanno murato vivo me, il Delfino, in questa oscura roccia, con una sola finestrella, irraggiungibile. Non la lontananza dalla luce del giorno mi fa il cuore così grave, quanto che non posso vedere te, sacro mare azzurro! Io non sento salire la marea, né strida di gabbiani, e se non muovo la catena, è silenzio di tomba. Hanno costruito lontano dal mare la torre, dove non batte l'onda, nessun uomo di mare fischia né fischia la tempesta, nessun colpo risuona nella tempesta. Non che mi hanno buttato nella notte silenziosa mi fa il cuore così grave, ma che non posso sentire te, mare dal profondo tuono. Le mie vecchie membra sono grevi e vuote, il mio corpo non guarirà mai, il mio pugno non farà esplodere più nulla né brandirà più la'scia d'arrembaggio. Issate la grande bandiera sull'albero maestro! Fate vedere il fianco della nave! Ragazzi, chi vi ruba il grano, il diavolo se lo porti. Non che mi sto spegnendo in prigione e in esilio mi fa il cuore così grave, ma che non posso più combattere su di te, mare sconvolto dalle battaglie! Qua e là, il feroce arrembaggio, ancora una volta, fuoco! Ah, nave contro nave, ponte contro ponte, ed io l'Ammiraglio! Oh, fossi caduto in mezzo al fischio delle pallottole! Qui giaccio invece, infermo e ferito, spasimo come un pesce nella sabbia e muoio come un cane! Non che muoio a poco a poco mi fa il cuore così grave, ma che non muoio su di te, mare spesso vinto. La nave addolorata lascia pendere le vele come le vesti nere di un vedova, la bandiera copre come un sudario il cadavere dell'eroe. Egli sprofonda nel mare dal ponte della nave, che trema per sacro timore, me invece, mi hanno tirato fuori dalla sabbia e non mi hanno dato il colpo di grazia! Non che la mia vita qui finisce mi fa il cuore così grave, ma che non posso riposare in te, mare, tomba d'eroi.
