Donker, hoe donker zijn bos nu en veld! Avond en stilte, geen zweem van geweld. Nergens nog licht en nergens nog rook, Ja, en de leeuw'rik, die zwijgt stil nu ook. Kijk, uit het dorp gaat de jongen op weg Is met zijn lief naar haar huis onderweg, Voert haar de wilgen, de bosjes voorbij, Praat met haar veel en zo velerlei: "Word je bespot en je voelt je niet blij, Word je bespot door and'ren om mij, Dan mag de liefde vlug weg wel weer gaan, Zoals zij vroeger ook snel is ontstaan; Gaan als het regent, en gaan als het waait, Snel zoals vroeger zij op is gelaaid." Nu spreekt het meisjelief, 't meisjelief spreekt: "Ons beider liefde, er is niets dat haar breekt! Sterk is het ijzer en 't staal evenzeer, Ons beider liefde is sterker nog meer.
