Soneto a Córdoba
Language: Spanish (Español)
Available translation(s): ENG FRE
¡Oh excelso muro, oh torres coronadas
de honor, de majestad, de gallardía !
¡Oh gran río, gran rey de Andalucía,
de arenas nobles, ya que no doradas !
¡Oh fértil llano, oh sierras levantadas
que privilegia el cielo y dora el dia !
¡Oh siempre gloriosa patria mia
tanto por plumas cuanto por espadas !
¡Si entre aquellas ruinas y despojos
que enriquece Genil y Dauro baña
tu memoria no fué alimento mío,
nunca merezcan mis ausentes ojos
ver tu muro, tus torres y tu río
tu llano y sierra, oh patria,
oh flor de España !

Cordoba Sonnet
Language: English  after the Spanish (Español)
"Oh lofty wall, oh towers crowned
with honour, majesty and elegance!
Oh great river, great king of Andalusia,
your sands are noble, although not golden!"
Oh fertile plain,oh soaring mountains
Favoured by the sky and gilded by sunlight
Oh my homeland, ever-renowned
As much for its writers as its swordsmen!
If among these ruins and remains of the Alhambra
which Genil adorns and Dauro bathes
your memory were not nourishment to me
my eyes should never again deserve to see
your walls, your tower and your river
your plain and mountains, my homeland,
the flower of Spain!
