O die roten Abendstunden!
Flimmernd schwankt am offenen Fenster
Weinlaub wirr ins Blau gewunden,
Drinnen nisten Angstgespenster.
Staub tanzt im Gestank der Gossen.
Klirrend stößt der Wind in Scheiben.
Einen Zug von wilden Rossen
Blitze grelle Wolken treiben,
Laut zerspringt der Weiherspiegel.
Möwen schrein am Fensterrahmen.
Feuerreiter sprengt vom Hügel
Und zerschellt im Tann zu Flammen.
Kranke kreischen im Spitale.
Bläulich schwirrt der Nacht Gefieder.
Glitzernd braust mit einem Male
Regen auf die Dächer nieder.

Oh, le ore rosse della sera!
Alla finestra aperta oscilla vibrando
il pergolato che con l'azzurro si confonde,
dove hanno il nido i fantasmi dell'ansia.
Danza la polvere nel puzzo delle fogne.
Sulla vetrata batte e tintinna il vento.
In un corteo di selvaggi destrieri
fulmini spingono nubi risonanti.
Con fragore si spacca lo specchio dello stagno.
Per la finestra un grido di gabbiani.
Il cavaliere rosso galoppa giù dal colle
e si sfracella sull'abete in fiamme.
Nell'ospedale urlano gli infermi.
Vola la notte in un piumaggio azzurro.
Scintillante la pioggia all'improvviso
cadendo giù scroscia sopra i tetti.
