Um's lodernde Feuer in schwellendem Grün, Da lagern die Männer verwildert und kühn, Da kauern die Weiber und rüsten das Mahl, Und füllen geschäftig den alten Pokal. A l’ombra del bosc, entre els faigs, allà quelcom es belluga, remoreja i xiuxiueja alhora. Les flames titil•len, la llum voleteja a l’entorn de bigarrades figures, del fullatge i del rocam. És la movedissa tribu dels gitanos, amb els ulls brillants i els cabells al vent, que han begut de les aigües sagrades del Nil, bronzejats per el sol ardent del sud d’Espanya. Al voltant del foc que flameja, enmig del verd frondós, reposen els homes, feréstecs i ardits, les dones ajupides, preparen el menjar i sol•lícites, omplen les antigues copes. En el cercle sonen llegendes i cants, tan exuberants i acolorits com els jardins d’Espanya, i sentències màgiques per a destrets i perills, proclama la vella al grup que l’escolta. Noies amb els ulls negres comencen la dansa. Espurnegen les torxes en rogenc fulgor. Fervents encativen les guitarres, sonen els címbals, mentre la rotllana s’entrellaça cada cop més furient. Després, reposen esgotats per la dansa nocturna. La remor de les capçades els fa adormir. I els que foren desterrats de la pàtria assolellada, veuen en somnis la seva terra estimada. Però quan el matí es desperta a llevant, s’esvaneixen les belles imatges de la nit, les peülles de les mules esgratinyen la terra. Marxen els gitanos – Qui et podria dir, a on?
