Der Traumgott bracht mich in ein Riesenschloß, Wo schwüler Zauberduft und Lichterschimmer, Und bunte Menschenwoge sich ergoß Durch labyrinthisch vielverschlungne Zimmer. Die Ausgangspforte sucht der bleiche Troß, Mit Händeringen und mit Angstgewimmer. Jungfraun und Ritter ragen aus der Menge, Ich selbst bin fortgezogen im Gedränge. Doch plötzlich steh ich ganz allein, und seh, Und staun, wie schnell die Menge konnt verschwinden, Und wandre fort allein, und eil, und geh Durch die Gemächer, die sich seltsam winden. Mein Fuß wird Blei, im Herzen Angst und Weh, Verzweifl' ich fast, den Ausgang je zu finden. Da komm ich endlich an das letzte Tor; Ich will hinaus -- o Gott, wer steht davor! Es war die Liebste, die am Tore stand, Schmerz um die Lippen, Sorge auf der Stirne. Ich soll zurückgehn, winkt sie mit der Hand; Ich weiß nicht, ob sie warne oder zürne. Doch aus den Augen bricht ein süßer Brand, Der mir durchzuckt das Herz und das Gehirne. Wie sie mich ansah, streng und wunderlich, Und doch so liebevoll, erwachte ich.

J'eus un rêve; -- un château de forme colossale M'apparut, vaporeux, plein d'étranges clartés; Dans ses appartements, vertigineux dédale, Chatoyante cohue, erraient les invités! Dames et chevaliers, livides d'épouvante, Criaient, cherchant l'issue en se tordant les mains, Quand moi-même, entraîné par leur foule mouvante, Un courant m'emporta dans ce chaos d'humains. Soudain je me vois seul, et, frémissant de crainte, Sans comprendre comment tous avaient disparu, Je parcours en tous sens le fuyant labyrinthe, Seul, en mon désespoir à chaque pas accru. Mes deux pieds sont de plomb; -- trouverai-je l'issue? Je marche en tâtonnant, fou d'angoisse et d'effroi. Lorsque la porte enfin dans l'ombre est aperçue Je veux la franchir, -- Dieu! qu'ai-je vu devant moi! Ma bien-aimée est là qui m'en défend l'approche, Triste et l'air soucieux; -- un geste de sa main, -- Est-ce avertissement, ou bien est-ce reproche? -- Me fait signe et m'exhorte à rebrousser chemin. De ses regards sortait une étrange lumière, Qui soudain fascina mon cœur émerveillé; Pendant que je tremblais sous leur charme sévère, Et cependant si plein d'amour, ... je m'éveillai.
