Al campo, proprio a mezzanotte, quando nessuno è sveglio tranne la sentinella, e tutto russa, cavalli e uomini, starei seduto davanti al tamburo: il tamburo sarebbe una scodella, con dentro una calda zuppa di crauti, le bacchette coltello e forchetta, una lunga salsiccia la mia sciabola; il mio colbacco sarebbe un bel boccale che riepmpirei di vino di Borgogna. E se non c'è abbastanza luce, splende la luna nella mia tenda; anche se splende alla francese, io penso la mia bella: ahimè, ahimè! Ora finisce il gioco! - Se solo mia madre sapesse fare magie!
