Liebesglück
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Wenn Dichter oft in warmen Phantasieen,
Von Liebesglück und schmerzlichem Vergnügen,
Sich oder uns, nach ihrer Art, belügen,
So sei dies Spielwerk ihnen gern verziehen.
Mir will mein Glück so unermeßlich dünken,

The joy of love
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Forgive that poet who enchants
Himself or us with flagrant lies
Of aching joys in paradise --
A trick to counter love's mischance.
But me, a kindly love-god grants
Safe conduct to those blissful heights:
A graceful figure clinging tight,
A glow behind her blameless glance.
I too once felt a lover's woe,
Did not reject the bitter taste,
Before it turned to sheer delight.
And now, these fantasies still grow:
My joy appears to me so vast,
In waking dreams I must take flight.
