Einstmals in einem tiefen Tal Kukuk und Nachtigall Täten ein Wett' anschlagen: Zu singen um das Meisterstück, Gewinn' es Kunst, gewinn' es Glück: Dank soll er davon tragen. Der Kukuk sprach: "So dir's gefällt, Hab' ich den Richter wählt", Und tät gleich den Esel ernennen. "Denn weil er hat zwei Ohren groß, So kann er hören desto bos Und, was recht ist, kennen!" Sie flogen vor den Richter bald. Wie dem die Sache ward erzählt, Schuf er, sie sollten singen. Die Nachtigall sang lieblich aus! Der Esel sprach: "Du machst mir's kraus! Du machst mir's kraus! I-ja! I-ja! Ich kann's in Kopf nicht bringen!" Der Kukuk drauf fing an geschwind Sein Sang durch Terz und Quart und Quint. Dem Esel g'fiels, er sprach nur "Wart! Wart! Wart! Dein Urteil will ich sprechen, Wohl sungen hast du, Nachtigall! Aber Kukuk, singst gut Choral! Und hältst den Takt fein innen! Das sprech' ich nach mein' hoh'n Verstand! Und kost' es gleich ein ganzes Land, So laß ich's dich gewinnen!"

Une fois dans une vallée profonde, Le coucou et le rossignol Firent un pari : Chanter un chef d'œuvre. Qu'il gagne par art ou par chance, Le vainqueur gagnerait la gloire. Le coucou dit : "Si tu es d'accord, Je nommerai le juge." Et il nomma aussitôt l'âne. "Puisque il a de grandes oreilles, Il peut entendre d'autant mieux Et saura ce qui est bien." Ils s'envolèrent vite vers le juge Et quand l'affaire lui fut expliquée, Il leur dit qu'ils devaient chanter. Le rossignol chanta adorablement ! l'âne dit : "Tu me donnes le vertige ! Tu me donnes le vertige. Hi-han ! hi-han ! Je ne peux le supporter dans ma tête !" Le coucou alors commença vite Son chant avec des tierces, des quartes, des quintes. L'âne le trouva plaisant et dit seulement : "Attends ! Attends ! Attends ! Je vais prononcer le jugement, Tu as bien chanté, Rossignol! Mais Coucou, tu as chanté un bon choral ! Et tu gardes bien le rythme ! Donc je dis suivant ma haute sagesse Et bien que cela puisse coûter un pays entier Que tu as gagné !"
