Drei Reiter nach verlorner Schlacht, Wie reiten sie so sacht, so sacht! Aus tiefen Wunden quillt das Blut, Es spürt das Roß die warme Flut. Vom Sattel tropft das Blut, vom Zaum Und spült hinunter Staub und Schaum. Die Rosse schreiten sanft und weich, Sonst flöß das Blut zu rasch, zu reich. Die Reiter reiten dicht gesellt, Und einer sich am andern hält. Sie sehn sich traurig ins Gesicht, Und einer um den andern spricht: "Mir blüht daheim die schönste Maid, Drum tut mein früher Tod mir leid." "Hab Haus und Hof und grünen Wald, Und sterben muß ich hier so bald!" "Den Blick hab ich in Gottes Welt, Sonst nichts, doch schwer mirs Sterben fällt." Und lauernd auf den Todesritt Ziehn durch die Luft drei Geier mit. Sie teilen kreischend unter sich: "Den speisest du, den du, den ich."

Après une bataille perdue trois cavaliers Chevauchent doucement si doucement ! Le sang coule de profondes blessures Et trace un chaud ruisseau sur les chevaux. Le sang dégouline de la selle, de la bride Et détrempe la poussière et l'écume. Les chevaux avancent avec précaution et douceur, Sinon le sang coulerait trop fort, trop abondamment. Les cavaliers chevauchent en groupe serré, Et l'un s'accroche à l'autre. Ils se regardent tristement dans les yeux, Et l'un après l'autre ils disent : » La plus belle des filles en fleur est à la maison, C'est pour ça que j'ai mal de mourir si tôt. « » J'ai une maison et une ferme et une verte forêt, Et je dois mourir ici d'un moment à l'autre ! « » Dans l'univers de Dieu, je n'ai que mon regard, Rien d'autre, et pourtant il me pèse fort de mourir. « Et aux aguets, suivant la chevauchée de la mort Dans les airs, trois vautours les accompagnent. Ils se les partagent en glapissant: Tu manges celui-ci, toi celui-ci , moi celui-là.
