Jo netejava la finestra abans del dia de festa, perquè el sol s’hi pogués emmirallar, netejava i pensava en tota mena de coses, quan ell, altiu, passà pel davant! Em vaig sobresaltar tant, que a l’instant vaig trencar el vidre, i tot seguit la sang rajava vermella per la meva mà. I encara que la meva mà sagnava i encara que la maleïda ferida em feia mal, tu vas mirar cap amunt quan es trencà el vidre. I jo et vaig mirar als ulls; ai Déu meu, feia tant de temps que això no passava! Tu no em vares mirar ni una sola vegada, quan, en silenci, es trencava el meu cor!
