Köchin in der Fremde
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Streu' ich Zucker auf die Speise,
bin ich wieder auf der Reise
ins Gebirge voller Schnee, -
wasch' ich vom Salat die Blätter,
wandre ich im Frühlingswetter
Wiesenwege überm See.
Brennt die Flamme blau im Herde,
beug' ich nieder mich zur Erde,
weil ich so viel Enzian seh'!

A cook in a foreign land
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
When I sprinkle sugar upon a dish [I am preparing],
I am once again on a journey
Into the mountains full of snow.
If I wash the leaves of lettuce,
I am once again walking in spring weather
On pathways through meadows above the lake.
When the flame burns blue in the oven
I bend down toward the earth
Because I see so many gentians!
