Du Schrecklicher, wer kann vor dir Und deinem Donner stehn? [Der Herr ist groß! Was]1 trotzen wir? Er winkt, und wir vergehn. Er lagert sich in schwarzer Nacht; Die Völker zittern schon: Geflügeltes Verderben wacht Um seinen furchtbarn Thron. Rothglühend schleudert seine Hand Den Blitz aus finstrer Höh: Und Donner stürzt sich auf das Land, In [einer]2 Feuersee: Daß selbst der Erde fester Grund Vom Zorn des Donners bebt, Und was um ihr [erschüttert]3 Rund Und in der Tiefe lebt. Den Herrn und seinen Arm erkennt Die zitternde Natur, Da weit umher der Himmel brennt Und weit umher die Flur. Gij, Vrees'lijke, wie kan er vrij voor u in 't onweer staan? Groot is de Heer, wat mokken wij? Hij wenkt en wij vergaan. Hij zet zijn tent in zwarte nacht, Angst heerst in elke woon; Gevleugeld onheil staat op wacht Rond zijn gevreesde troon. Roodgloeiend smijt zijn macht'ge hand Geflits uit 't donk're zwerk; En donder stort zich in een brand Van vuur op land en kerk. Zodat zelfs aarde's vaste grond Door 't donderwoeden beeft, En alwat er geschokt in 't rond En in de diepte leeft. De Heer en zijn gezag erkent De sidd'rende natuur, Waar hemelhoog het licht rondrent En ver in 't land het vuur. Wie hoedt mij sterveling, mij stof, Als Die daarboven leeft En sterren plukt als dorrend lof, Niet minzaam mij vergeeft?
