Du heilig, glühend Abendroth!
Der Himmel will in Glanz zerrinnen,
So scheiden [Märtyrer]1 von hinnen
Holdlächelnd in dem Liebestod.
Des Aufgangs Berge still und grau,
Am Grab des Tags die hellen Gluten,
Der Schwan auf purpurrothen Fluten,
Und jeder Halm im Silberthau!
O Sonne, Gottesstrahl, du bist
Nie herrlicher, als im [Entfliehen]2,
Du willst uns gern [hinüber ziehen]3,
Wo deines Glanzes Urquell ist.

Het avondrood
Language: Dutch (Nederlands)  after the German (Deutsch)
Jij, heilig, gloeiend avondrood!
De hemel wil in glans vervloeien:
Zo slaken martelaars hun boeien,
Glimlachend in hun liefdesdood.
Bij dageraad bergen stil en grauw,
Maar helle gloed bij 't daggraf later;
De zwaan op 't purperrode water,
En elke halm in zilv'ren dauw!
O zonne, godenstraal, jij bent
Nooit heerlijker dan bij het gaan!
Jij nam ons graag mee hier vandaan
Naar waar jouw glans zijn oerbron kent.
