Ich würd' auf meinem Pfad' mit Tränen
Oft hin zum fernen Ende seh'n,
Säh' ich nicht Kenner meiner Leiden
So mitleidsvoll am Wege steh'n.
Den Sonnenbrand, der mich entkräftet,
Den Blitz, der meinem Scheitel droht,
Den sieht mein Freund und tritt mir näher
Und ruft: »Ich kenne deine Not.«
Zwar schmerzt es mich, daß er den Jammer
Mit ansieht und, zur Hälfte schwach,
Nichts weiter kann, als mit mir trauern.
Doch ruft mein Herz: »Er weint dir nach.«
Dann brech' ich mutig durch die Dornen:
»Er sieht mich bluten,« sprech' ich dann.
Und wenn ich einst, verblutet, falle,
Dann sag' er: »Der stieg felsenan.«

Je regarderai avec des larmes sur mon chemin
Souvent vers l'extrémité lointaine,
Si je ne vois pas celui qui connaît ma peine
Se tenant si plein de pitié sur ma route.
La brûlure du soleil qui m'affaiblit,
L'éclair qui menace mon crâne,
Mon ami les voit et s'approche de moi
Et il dit : "Je connais ta détresse."
Certes cela me fait du mal qu'en ma misère
Il me voit et incapable de m'aider,
Il ne puisse pas plus que s'affliger avec moi.
Pourtant mon cœur dit :" Il pleure avec toi.".
Alors j'apparais courageux sous les épines :
"Il me voit saigner," dis-je alors,
Et si un jour je perds mon sang, je tombe,
Alors il dira : "Il est monté vers le rocher."
